Oven Mittens (with the required test baking, a Caramel Oat Slice).

Making Oven Mittens is easy and a great gift for friends and family.

Just follow the easy steps below to create your own.

What you will need:

Cotton fabric - for the both the length and the pockets, this can be the same or different colours.

Thick wool fabric - Some heatproof fabric for inside the mitten, I used wool but other options are available.

Matching cotton thread.

A paper cutout of the mitten size you wish to make can be helpful.

Remember it needs to be usable so don't make it too long or too short. I like mine to be about 96cm end to end, but make it however long works for you.

Step 1.

Cut out your pieces.

You need 2 times the full length of your mittens (in cotton fabric).

You will need 2 times your mitten in cotton fabric (shown in cupcake fabric in the picture).

You will need 2 times your mitten in heavy wool fabric (as shown in dark blue in picture).

Remember these are for handling hot pans, so avoid synthetic fabrics.

Step 2.

Sew the woolen mitten pads to each end of one of your long pieces. sew all the way around the wool pad using a straight stitch at the edge.

Step 3.

Take the two mitten pocket outers and sew the hem edge on each as shown below.

Step 4.

Now sew the mitten pockets onto the ends of your other long piece as shown below.

You will now have the two halves of your Mittens ready to sew together.

Step 5.

Now to put everything together.

Now with the pieces facing right side in pin your two long pieces together (one piece will have wool on the ends the other the mitten pockets). The mitten pockets will be inside, but the wool will be outside at this stage. Your going to sew most of the way around, leaving a gap of about 5 to 10 cm in the middle of your long strip on one side, to allow you to turn your mitten in the right way.

Step 6.

Turn your Mittens in the right way and sew up the gap.

I like to sew a straight seam up each side from pocket to pocket.

And just like that you have made your very own Oven Mittens.

Happy creating everyone.
